Malala Endorses Sifuna for Opposition Running Mate

DCP Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala has endorsed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna for the deputy president position under the United Opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking on Saturday, July 4, Malala argued that the position should be reserved for a leader from the Luhya community, saying the Western region was not seeking the presidency but expected to produce the opposition’s running mate.

The former Kakamega Senator urged opposition leaders, including Kalonzo Musyoka, Rigathi Gachagua and Fred Matiang’i, to agree on a single presidential candidate, with the others rallying behind the chosen flag bearer.

He proposed Sifuna as the preferred candidate for the deputy president slot, maintaining that regardless of who secures the presidential ticket, the running mate should come from the Western region.

Malala further stated that if Sifuna is not selected for the role, the opposition should instead consider another Luhya leader, including former Defence Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa.

His remarks come as Sifuna continues to emerge as one of the opposition’s prominent figures ahead of the 2027 elections through the Linda Mwananchi movement, which has positioned itself against President William Ruto’s re-election bid.

Malala’s endorsement also comes weeks after Head of Presidential Special Projects and Creative Economy Dennis Itumbi claimed that Sifuna and Kalonzo Musyoka had already agreed to form a coalition party.

According to Itumbi, the coalition would front Kalonzo as its presidential candidate and Sifuna as his running mate, while combining the Linda Mwananchi movement’s name with the Wiper Patriotic Front Party’s “Komboa Kenya” slogan. Neither Kalonzo nor Sifuna publicly confirmed the claims.
