Liverpool FC secured their spot at Wembley next month after a thorough 4-0 victory in the second leg of the semi-final tie at Anfield as they overturned a 1-0 deficit against Tottenham Hotspur.
A goal from Gakpo alongside a Mohamed Salah penalty and efforts from Dominik Szoboszlai and Virgil van Dijk clinched the win.
Arne Slot has now set up a meeting with fellow Premier League outfit Newcastle United in the competition’s Final at the Wembley stadium on March 16.
Cody Gakpo opened the scores and levelled the aggregate by firing in a right-foot shot in the 34th minute from a Mohamed Salah cross.
The Egyptian added his name to the scoresheet, shooting high into the net from the penalty spot in the 51st minute after Spurs goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky fouled Darwin Nunez.
Dominik Szoboszlai slotted home the third in the match while Virgil Van Dijk completed the riot with a header making it 4-0 at Anfield and 4-1 on aggregate.
Spurs failed to register a single shot on target in a match for the first time under coach Ange.
“We are on the right track, We have to take it game by game and step by step. Today it’s a good job done. We are in one final, but we have a lot to play for still. We have to stay calm and focus to reach as much as possible.” explained Gakpo
The Reds will be looking forward to defend the title.
The final will be Liverpool’s 15th in the League Cup but a first in English football for Liverpool’s Dutch head coach Arne Slot, who replaced Jurgen Klopp at the end of last season.
