KMPDU Orders Redeployment of Healthcare Interns Amid Kiambu Crisis

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has confirmed that 697 healthcare interns assigned to Kiambu County have been redeployed.

In a statement on Sunday, September 28, KMPDU Secretary General Davji Atellah directed the interns to collect their redeployment letters from the Ministry of Health starting Monday, September 29, at 9:00 AM.

The move comes after a four-month doctorsโ€™ strike in Kiambu that stalled the commencement of the internship programme.

โ€œAll interns currently in Kiambu County are therefore required to collect the redeployment letters from the MoH effective tomorrow, September 29, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. As the strike in Kiambu is now in its fourth month with no end in sight, there is an urgent need to protect the sanctity of the internship, and it should not be affected prolonged county strikes,โ€ read the statement in part.

Atellah warned the interns that failure to collect their redeployment letters would be deemed as absconding duty.

The 697 interns comprise 138 Medical Officer Interns, 48 Pharmacist Interns, 5 Dentist Interns, 297 BSc Nursing Interns, 134 Clinical Officer (Diploma) Interns, and 75 Clinical Officer (Degree) Interns.

This comes weeks after Health CS Aden Duale announced that the ministry would redeploy the interns if the doctors’ strike in Kiambu County is not resolved.

CS Duale explained that the measure is necessary to safeguard the internsโ€™ training, facilitate the timely progression of their programme, and keep them aligned with their peers nationwide.
