Kioni Raises Questions Over Jubilee’s Future in Ukombozi Alliance

Jubilee Deputy Party Leader Jeremiah Kioni has questioned the party’s continued involvement in the Ukombozi Alliance, calling for the formation of a new and more inclusive political coalition ahead of the 2027 General Election.

In a statement on Thursday, October 8, Kioni expressed concern over Jubilee’s continued participation in the political outfit, which was previously known as the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Coalition Party.

He argued that Jubilee should instead focus on building a fresh political formation that brings together different parties and gives them a broader platform ahead of the 2027 polls.

Kioni’s remarks came a day after former President Uhuru Kenyatta resigned as Chair of the Council of the Ukombozi Alliance.

The coalition confirmed on Wednesday, October 7, that it had received Kenyatta’s resignation letter dated October 5, in which he stepped down from the leadership position with immediate effect.

Ukombozi Alliance Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka thanked Kenyatta for his leadership and clarified that his resignation from the chairperson position did not amount to leaving the coalition.

Kalonzo also maintained that Kenyatta remained part of the wider political family and could continue providing counsel to the coalition.

He further clarified that the positions of Chair of Council and Party Leader were separate, meaning Kenyatta’s resignation did not affect Kalonzo’s position as the political and executive head of the party.

Kalonzo said there was therefore no leadership vacuum within Ukombozi and that the coalition’s political direction and programmes remained unchanged.

Kioni’s call for a new political arrangement now adds to the debate within Jubilee and the wider opposition camp over the coalition structures that will shape the 2027 political landscape.
