KFCB Orders Katombi to Pull Down ‘Wikend’ Music Video

The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) has flagged a music video titled Wikend by Kamba musician Alex Kasau Katombi over alleged breaches of Kenya’s film classification and distribution laws.

In a statement on Friday, October 16, the board raised concerns over the video’s sexually explicit scenes, nudity, indecent exposure and depiction of substance abuse.

KFCB noted that the video, which premiered on YouTube, also features alcohol consumption and tobacco use, raising concerns about its suitability for general audiences, particularly minors.

The board further revealed that the music video reached the public without undergoing the mandatory licensing and classification procedures required under Kenyan law.

KFCB discovered the alleged violations during routine compliance monitoring activities aimed at ensuring audiovisual content distributed in the country meets the applicable legal requirements.

Following the findings, the board directed Katombi to remove the video from his YouTube channel and other digital platforms where children could access it.

KFCB also confirmed that it was working with Google Kenya and relevant law enforcement agencies to enforce the directive and restrict access to the content.

The board maintained that creative freedom must operate within the law, urging artists and other content creators to comply with established regulations when producing and distributing audiovisual material.

It reiterated its opposition to the production and circulation of unlawful content, emphasising the need for responsible creative expression and adherence to Kenya’s film classification requirements.

At the same time, KFCB called on parents, guardians and caregivers to take a more active role in monitoring the content children consume online.

The board encouraged caregivers to activate parental controls on digital platforms and report harmful or inappropriate audiovisual material through its official email for appropriate action.
