Kenyan Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Mama Ida Odinga, on Tuesday, April 7, paid her first official visit to the UN offices in Nairobi.
She was accompanied by her children Rosemary Odinga, Raila Odinga Junior, and Winnie Odinga during the visit to the UN complex.
The newly appointed ambassador received a warm welcome from staff as she formally assumed her role.

In a statement, Winnie Odinga expressed her pride in escorting her mother on her first day at the UN offices, describing it as an honour.
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) extended its best wishes to Mama Ida Odinga as she takes on her new role at UNEP.
Mama Ida was nominated by President William Ruto on January 23, 2026, to serve as Kenya’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to UNEP.
In a statement, Head of Public Service Felix Koskei praised Mama Ida Odinga’s extensive career in education and public service, describing her as a respected teacher and civic leader committed to social justice and gender equity.
Following her nomination by President William Ruto, Mama Ida’s appointment was forwarded to the National Assembly for consideration and approval.
She appeared before the Departmental Committee on Defence, Intelligence, and Foreign Relations for vetting on February 20.
During her vetting, Mama Ida Odinga pledged to prioritize environmental protection and pursue clear sustainability goals.
She disclosed a personal net worth of Ksh500 million, separate from the late Raila Odinga’s family assets.
The National Assembly approved her appointment on February 25, 2026. She succeeds Ababu Namwamba, now Kenyan High Commissioner to Uganda.
