Advocate Willis Otieno also mourned Kiai, portraying him as a trusted friend and principled defender of justice whose impact transcended the sphere of activism.
Reflecting on Kiai’s resolve even during his illness, Willis Otieno said his legacy would be remembered for its firm stand against impunity and unwavering solidarity with marginalized communities.
He noted that the country had lost a principled voice for justice, civil society had been deprived of a committed ally, and he personally had lost a close friend.
Willis Otieno also conveyed his sympathies to Kiai’s family and urged Kenyans to uphold the values he championed.
He expressed hope that the family would find strength during the difficult period and encouraged the public to remain steadfast, courageous and committed in advancing the human rights ideals that defined Kiai’s work.
