Kenyan Charged in U.S. Over Theft in USAID-Funded KEMSA Project

The US government has charged a 40-year-old Kenyan with allegedly conspiring to steal medical supplies worth millions.

According to investigations by the US authorities, the suspect conspired with his Guyanese accomplice to allegedly steal HIV test kits and other medical commodities supplied to Kenya by the American government.

This was after the US government had provided medical supplies worth Ksh83 billion through the USAID programme to help the country in its fight against HIV/AIDS.

This led to the man taking advantage of the opportunity and opening a registered company to allegedly steal HIV test kits intended for the country’s ailing population.

The commodities would therefore be bought by another firm which belongs to the Guyanese national.

The Guyanese even went ahead and sold the allegedly stolen test kits from a separate USAID-funded programme as well.

Based on the finding, if the Kenyan national is found guilty, he might risk spending almost 20 years in prison.
