Kenya Secures Ksh1.8 Billion Grant From China for Healthcare Development Projects

Kenya has secured a Ksh 1.8 billion grant from the Chinese government to upgrade hospitals.

China and Kenya signed the grant agreement on Thursday morning, with the funds providing crucial capital injections toward the improvement of health facilities.

“The CS Hon. FCPA John Mbadi this morning signed a KSh 1.8 billion (RMB 100 million) grant agreement with H.E. Ms. Guo Haiyan, the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China at the Treasury Building,” the Ministry of National Treasury said in a statement.

Some of the health care facilities that will benefit from the grant include: Londiani Referral Hospital, Baringo County Referral Hospital, and Kilifi Hospital.

Misikhu Hospital, Bildad Kagia Hospital, and Kaimosi Farmers Training College will also benefit from the grant.

CS Mbadi thanked the Chinese Government for its continued support to Kenya, noting that the partnership underscores strong bilateral ties between Kenya and China.

Notably in September 2024, during President William Ruto’s official visit to China, Kenya secured a Ksh 40 billion loan from the Chinese government.

This funding is designated for the completion of 15 stalled infrastructure projects across more than ten counties, aiming to enhance regional development and economic growth.

China is Kenya’s largest bilateral lender and with the government indicating it has no option but to continue borrowing, China’s share of Kenya’s debt is likely to grow once again.
