Kenya Railways Rehabilitates Key Rift Valley Route

Kenya Railways has announced a significant milestone in the restoration of the Uplands-Kijabe-Longonot railway corridor.

The corporation confirmed on Monday, January 19, that all rehabilitation works on the corridor have been completed and that the line has successfully undergone safety verification through test runs.

While the main works are now finished, Kenya Railways noted that slope protection work is still ongoing to secure the surrounding terrain and ensure the long-term stability and safety of the infrastructure.

Kenya Railways highlighted that the completion of these milestones has cleared the way for the resumption of freight services along the corridor.

Preparations are now underway to restart transportation through the Kijabe line, connecting Mombasa to Nyanza and Western Kenya, as well as neighboring countries including Uganda, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and South Sudan.

This comes weeks after announcing the Kisumu Safari Train’s return where the Kenya Railways confirmed the festive service will run from December 19, 2025, to January 12, 2026.

The train departs from Nairobi Central, stopping at Nairobi Terminus and Maai Mahiu, before reaching Kisumu.

First-class tickets are KSh 2,400, while Economy-Class costs KSh 900.
