The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced that the indefinite closure of a footbridge, which stands along the Isebania-Sare (A1) road.
In a notice on Monday, February 23, 2026, the authority stated that the closure is a safety precaution and will remain in effect until further notice.
“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) wishes to inform the public and all road users that the section at the Migori Footbridge along the Isebania – Sare (A1) Road will be closed to traffic indefinitely from today, February 23”, part of the statement read.
KeNHA noted that the development is as a result of rising water levels on River Migori caused by the ongoing heavy rains across the region.
According to reports, the swelling of the river overwhelmed the bridge, leading to the erosion of the gabion protection on the upstream side of the footbridge.
As a result, the bridge suspended dangerously and cut off from the riverbank, posing a threat to pedestrians.
KeNHA has therefore advised pedestrians to use the main bridge to cross the river. The main bridge remains operational for motorised traffic.
The authority further assured the public that the situation is being closely monitored, and restoration works will commence immediately once water levels recede.
