Kahiga’s Viral Video on Raila’s Death Ignites Public Fury

Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga has sparked public outrage after a viral video surfaced showing him making controversial remarks that appeared to celebrate the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Speaking in Kikuyu during an event in Kieni, Nyeri, Kahiga claimed that Raila’s death was part of God’s plan to restore development to the Mt. Kenya region.

In the widely circulated clip, the county boss suggested that Raila’s passing had disrupted political arrangements that, in his view, sidelined the mountain region from government benefits and priorities.

The remarks sparked condemnation from leaders across the political divide, who described them as distasteful and unbecoming of a county governor.

The former Prime Minister was laid to rest on Sunday, October 19, at his ancestral home in Kang’o Ka Jaramogi, Bondo, Siaya County, after passing away in India.

The burial followed a solemn funeral service held at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST), where leaders, dignitaries, and thousands of mourners gathered to pay their final respects.

After the service, members of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) carried Raila’s casket to a hearse before conducting full military honors at the graveside — a mark of respect for his decades of service to the nation.

In a symbolic gesture, Raila was laid to rest wearing his signature hat and holding his iconic fly whisk — items that had long defined his image and legacy in Kenya’s political history.
