Joshua Stages Stunning Comeback to Stop Prenga

Former two-time heavyweight world champion Anthony Joshua produced a remarkable comeback to defeat Albanian heavyweight Kristian Prenga by second-round knockout on Saturday night, keeping alive hopes of a long-awaited all-British showdown with Tyson Fury later this year.

The bout, staged at the Jeddah Superdome, got off to a nightmare start for Joshua as the 36-year-old was floored twice in the opening round by the hard-hitting Prenga.

The early knockdowns left the British boxer in serious danger of suffering one of the biggest upsets of his career, with Prenga capitalising on Joshua’s slow start and landing heavy punches that rocked the former champion.

However, Joshua showed the resilience that has defined much of his professional career.

After surviving the opening round, he returned with renewed aggression in the second, gradually taking control of the contest before unleashing a series of powerful right hands that left Prenga unable to defend himself.

The referee stepped in to stop the fight, handing Joshua a dramatic knockout victory.

The victory marked Joshua’s successful return to the ring after months away from competition following a serious car accident in Nigeria late last year that claimed the lives of two close friends and left him recovering from injuries.

Speaking after the fight, an emotional Joshua acknowledged the difficult period he had endured and described the victory as a testament to perseverance and a champion’s mentality.

Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, praised the former champion’s fighting spirit, saying the comeback victory demonstrated the mental strength required to overcome adversity both inside and outside the ring.

Hearn added that the result keeps Joshua on course for a blockbuster fight against fellow Briton Tyson Fury, with both camps having already agreed terms for the long-awaited heavyweight clash.

The victory improves Joshua’s professional record and restores confidence ahead of what could become one of the biggest heavyweight contests in British boxing history.

Fury also won his warm-up bout on Friday, clearing another hurdle towards the eagerly anticipated showdown between the two former world champions.

Despite the victory, Joshua’s performance also exposed defensive vulnerabilities after being knocked down twice by an opponent many had expected him to beat comfortably.

Nevertheless, his ability to recover and produce a decisive stoppage under pressure once again highlighted the devastating power that has made him one of boxing’s biggest stars.
