Veteran Pilot James Gitahi Nguyo, who was known for flying former presidents Mwai Kibaki and Daniel Arap Moi, has passed away.
According to reports, he died in a tragic road accident at Kyumvi junction on Mombasa Highway after his vehicle collided head-on with an oncoming lorry and burst into flames.
The accident which occurred on Wednesday, March 5 2025, reduced Nguyo’s car to ashes, leaving his body burnt beyond recognition.
Reports also indicate that he was alone in the car at the time of the incident.

Witnesses around suggested that the retired pilot was overtaking another lorry when he misjudged the distance approaching a truck.
This sent the vehicle off the road, catching fire and trapping him inside.
His body was taken to a Machakos mortuary, awaiting transfer to Lee Funeral Home.
Nguyo had the opportunity to fly former President Moi for decades and former President Kibaki while he was serving the military.
The retired pilot flew the two former presidents from 1992 to 2010, when he retired.
After retirement, he continued flying commercial aircraft at Wilson Airport.
Senate Speaker Amason mourned Nguyo, describing him as a pilot who helped redefine air transport in the country and ensure safe skies through the mentorship of upcoming pilots.
