COTU Issues Notice to Kenyans Working Abroad

The Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli has urged Kenyans working abroad to register with Kenyan Embassies, High Commissions, Consulates, and Permanent Missions in their respective countries.

In a statement issued on Thursday, November 13, Atwoli emphasized that proper registration is essential to facilitate government assistance and protection in cases of emergencies or disputes involving Kenyan workers overseas.

He noted that as Kenya continues to position itself as a labour-exporting nation, it is crucial for citizens working abroad to be formally documented through official government channels to enhance accountability and ensure timely intervention when challenges arise.

Atwoli also revealed that COTU has, in recent months, received several distress calls from Kenyan workers abroad, expressing concern over the growing number of individuals traveling overseas for purposes unrelated to employment, including activism and political agitation.

Atwoli went on to warn that such activities could expose Kenyan workers abroad to legal consequences in their host countries and potentially harm the welfare and reputation of other Kenyan citizens working there.

He expressed concern over Kenyans who bypass proper registration channels yet later hold the government, particularly the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, responsible for any issues that arise, despite traveling abroad with personal agendas.

The COTU boss further emphasized that COTU will not tolerate foreigners who engage in disruptive activities within Kenya, underscoring the union’s commitment to protecting both Kenyan workers and national stability.
