IEBC Warns Public Against Double Voter Registration

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has warned the public against engaging in double voter registration, emphasizing that the act constitutes an electoral offence.

In its Thursday, November 20 update, the commission stated that its system automatically detects any individual who tries to register more than once.

IEBC further urged Kenyans to avoid spreading misleading information during the ongoing voter registration exercise and to adhere to the legal requirements guiding the process.

IEBC began its Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise on September 29 as part of preparations for the 2027 General Election.

The registration drive is expected to add 6.8 million new voters to the roll through three phases.

The initial phase seeks to capture 10 percent of this figure, followed by the First Enhanced CVR—scheduled after the November 27, 2025 by-elections—which aims for 40 percent.

The remaining 50 percent will be targeted during the Second Enhanced CVR planned for the next financial year.

Despite these plans, IEBC Commissioner Ann Nderitu reported that the commission has so far registered only around 140,000 new voters.

She linked the sluggish progress to the common tendency of Kenyans delaying important processes until the last moment, even when the registration is ongoing.
