Heavy Downpours Turn Deadly, Leaving 10 Dead and Transport Paralyzed

At least 10 people have been confirmed dead as heavy rains continue across various parts of the country.

According to a statement by the National Police Service (NPS) deadly flooding has led to landslides and infrastructure damage.

In the update, the service revealed that the Eastern region has so far recorded seven facilities.

However, authorities did not immediately specify the circumstances of the individual deaths but warned that risks remain high as the downpours persist.

Additionally, two bridges have been damaged by the rains, further disrupting transport in already vulnerable regions.

Mwena Bridge in Kwale County in the Coast region and Ngomeni Bridge in Kitui County in the Eastern region have both sustained damage, cutting off access for some communities.

In Elgeyo Marakwet County, a landslide has been reported in Tambach Sub-County, threatening infrastructure in the highland area.

“In addition, two bridges — Mwena in Kwale, Coast Region, and Ngomeni in Kitui, Eastern Region — have been damaged, disrupting transport and access in some areas. A landslide has also been reported in Tambach Sub-County, Elgeyo Marakwet, posing further risks to residents and infrastructure”, part of the statement by the National Police Service read.

According to the police, saturated soils and continuing rainfall could destabilise more slopes in the coming days.

In response to the matter, the police revealed that emergency response teams are actively on the ground conducting rescue operations, assisting affected communities, and working to restore access and critical services.

The further urged all persons, especially those in high-risk and affected areas, to remain vigilant, avoid flooded zones, heed advisories from local authorities, and stay informed as the Kenya Meteorological Department
