Harambee Starlets plead for support from President Ruto, Sports Ministry ahead of WAFCON

The Harambee Starlets have called on the government to show greater support for the women’s team ahead of the Women’s African Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Speaking to the media during training on Friday, February 27, the players emphasized their readiness to represent Kenya at the tournament, starting in mid-March.

However, they expressed disappointment at the lack of visible support compared to the men’s team, which often receives recognition during major competitions.

According to the players, neither President William Ruto nor Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has met them or offered words of encouragement.

They believe such gestures could boost morale and strengthen their chances of performing well, rather than feeling overlooked by the nation.

“No one has come out to show us support. Support doesn’t have to be financialy but just a visit to show togetherness. This is a big tournament, bigger than CHAN, but it looks like it’s a smaller one. Mr. President should show up for the ladies like he did for the boys. The only messages we’ve received are from our technical bench, which are important. We would like to meet the president before we leave,” Mwanahalima “Dogo” Adam said.

The Starlets face a tough group stage against Morocco, Senegal, and Algeria, with their opening match scheduled against the hosts on the first day.

Before the tournament, they will play crucial friendlies against Benin and Côte d’Ivoire, testing themselves against strong opposition to sharpen their preparations.

Squad members, Ruth Ingotsi and Eglay Mukhwana reiterated during training that the team’s target is to reach the semi-finals, a goal set by coach Beldine Odemba.

Despite several newcomers joining the squad, the players believe their mix of talent and experience will carry them far in the competition.

The Starlets remain determined to fly Kenya’s flag high in Morocco, but they insist that visible government support would inspire confidence and unity across the nation.
