Governor Kimani Wamatangi Arrested by EACC Detectives

Kiambu county Governor Kimani Wamatangi has been arrested and taken to the commission’s offices in Nairobi.

The arrest came a few hours after raids at his residences and offices on Tuesday morning, April 15, by detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

Reports indicate that the raids were part of a wider investigation into alleged embezzlement of public funds and conflicts of interest involving the governor and nine other senior county officials.

During the morning raid, nine other senior county officials also had their premises searched over suspected embezzlement of public funds and conflict of interest.

Wamatangi during the arrest was seen waving to the locals from the back seat of an SUV as the detectives escorted him to their offices for interrogation.

This is the second time that the county is hitting headlines over the conduct of its leadership, with the former Governor Ferdinand Waititu currently locked behind bars over a multimillion graft case.

Waititu was sentenced to 12 years in prison by Milimani Anti-Corruption Court Chief Magistrate Thomas Nzioki on February 13 after being convicted in a Ksh588 million graft case.

Notably, Wamatangi’s arrest came a year after Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah and his Thika Town counterpart Alice Ng’ang’a called for the arrest and investigation of Wamatangi.

Their call was based on allegations of embezzlement and financial mismanagement within the Kiambu County government.
