Governor Kang’ata Shuns ‘Wantam’ vs ‘Tutam’ Politics

Governor Irungu Kang’ata has reiterated that he does not wish to be involved in the politics of ‘Wantam’ or ‘Tutam’.

Speaking during an interview on Monday, February 9, Kang’ata described the two slogans as distractions designed to occupy Kenyans until 2027.

He said he has resisted pressure from politicians and residents of Murang’a to take a side, emphasizing that his focus remains on development rather than temporary political debates.

“The politics of wantam and tutam are sweet, but we took a philosophical stance that ‘Wantam’ and ‘Tutam’ will end within the next one year, six months, but the road that we have built will be with us for many years. Yes, people will clap when we talk about ‘Wantam’ or ‘Tutam’, but we know that it is a passing glance. We are more interested in a better future for our society,” Kang’ata noted.

However, the Governor acknowledged that his decision to remain neutral on the issue could come at the cost of his political career, a price he is prepared to pay.

Kang’ata noted that voters often learn from past mistakes when they focus on populist politics instead of supporting leaders with a record of delivering development.

He added that taking sides between President Ruto and Rigathi Gachagua could ultimately be detrimental to Murang’a County, reinforcing his commitment to prioritizing development over political allegiances.

Governor Kang’ata said some politicians have tried to provoke him into taking sides, but he remains committed to avoiding conflict.

He urged Kenyans to view elections differently and noted that countries with significant development often keep politics separate from progress.
