Students joining universities and colleges in May and September might benefit from the new university funding model.
The government will be introducing new variables to cluster students into categories that much their financial situation.
According to education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Julius Ogamba, the variable have been adjusted to closely match each student’s unique capabilities.
“The issues raised indicated that some of the variables used did not accurately reflect the students’ financial capability. Therefore, we have been refining that particular committee’s work, which includes assessing the cost of programs,” the CS said on Friday during a graduation ceremony at Nyeri Polytechnic.

Under the new system, students will be identified into one out of four categories: vulnerable, extremely needy, needy, or less needy.
The categories will determine the amount of funding each student receives.
Despite that, many have reported being placed in the wrong category, which forces them to dig into their pockets to pay for their higher education.
Additionally, has established a structure that will categorize students into clusters based on their importance and economic value in that courses such as medicine will receive significantly more funding.
“We have been cleaning that through the committee that was set up, including the cost of the programmes. The variables have been expanded so that they can produce results that are as close as possible to the capacity of the individuals,” CS Ogamba added.
