Gachagua Voices Support for Gen Z Protests on Rising Fuel Costs

Rigathi Gachagua, the DCP Party leader, on Monday, April 20, expressed his support for Gen Z ahead of planned demonstrations over the recent rise in fuel prices.

Gachagua indicated that while the United Opposition would not directly participate in the mass action, young people had the autonomy to make their own decisions, which he said he respected.

He further noted that the Opposition would review the situation following the Ksh9 fuel price reduction and subsequently provide guidance to the public on the next course of action.

At the same time, he emphasized that leaders could only offer recommendations, maintaining that the ultimate decision rests with Kenyans.

The DCP leader also urged President Ruto, DP Kithure Kindiki, and Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen to ensure that the violence witnessed during the June 2024 protests is not repeated.

He cautioned against the use of excessive force if young people proceed with demonstrations over the rising cost of fuel.

At the same time, Gachagua emphasized that while protests can drive awareness and pressure for change, lasting transformation would ultimately be achieved through the electoral process.

He encouraged Gen Z to take an active role in shaping the country’s future by registering as voters and participating in the General Election scheduled for August 2027.

He further noted that although young people had made significant strides in civic engagement and awareness, the next step would be to channel that momentum into the ballot, which he described as the most effective tool for achieving meaningful political change.

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) reduced fuel prices by Ksh9 for super petrol and Ksh10 for diesel following a VAT cut to 8 per cent.

President William Ruto said the government had also allocated Ksh6.2 billion to cushion consumers through fuel subsidies.

Meanwhile, Nairobi Police Commander Issa Mohammud stated that authorities had not received any formal notice of planned protests on Tuesday and cautioned the public against participating in unlawful demonstrations.
