Former CJ Maraga Hints at 2027 Presidential bid

Former Chief Justice David Maraga has condemned corruption in Kenya.

Speaking during the People Dialogue Festival at Uhuru Park on Thursday 5 2025, Maraga stated that corruption is one of Kenya’s biggest challenges and stressed the need for accountable leadership.

“The truth of the matter is corruption is ailing this country and many African countries. The moment you deal with corruption, we will have no problem,” the former CJ said.

Maraga added that he would get everybody to obey the law if given a chance to become the president.

“If I was to be given the privilege to govern this country, I would get everybody to obey the law. The moment you have everybody obey the law, everything will fall into place. And that is the only problem we have”.

When asked whether he would consider running for president, he posed a question instead.

“I want to ask you: Which type of leader do you want to have? The state of the country is bad…it’s open for everybody to see that the resources are being plundered, right, left and center. The leadership that is required is accountable to the people. The leadership we need understands that when you are in a position of leadership, you are just a trustee to people”, Maraga stated.

Maraga also criticized attempts to extend the presidential term limit, claiming that such suggestions are leaders’ selfish ambitions.

The former CJ further weighed in on the petitions seeking the removal of Chief Justice Martha Koome and other judges.

He dismissed them as dishonest and politically motivated, arguing that the cases were being used for personal and political gain.
