Flamingo Extra-time Goal Knocks Out Juventus as PSV Overturn a First Leg Loss

Defender Ryan Flamingo scored an extra-time winner, leading PSV Eindhoven to a 3-1 home victory on Wednesday in the second leg of their Champions League knockout phase playoff against Juventus. This result overturned a first-leg deficit and secured PSV’s place in the last 16.

The tie was level at 3-3 on aggregate after 90 minutes, prompting the match to go into extra time. Flamingo found the net in the 98th minute, sealing the Dutch side’s advancement as Juventus became the third Italian team eliminated from the competition, following AC Milan and Atalanta on Tuesday.

This marked the first time Juventus failed to progress from a Champions League knockout playoff tie after 20 consecutive victories.

Despite having a 2-1 advantage from the first leg, which was expected to boost their confidence, Juventus struggled in Eindhoven, suffering a painful elimination from the tournament.

The first half ended in a 0-0 stalemate, but PSV broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute when veteran Ivan Perisic scored. The 36-year-old Perisic delivered a stunning finish after Noa Lang sprinted down the left wing and made a cutback pass to him. Perisic controlled the ball with a delicate first touch before striking a half-volley across the goal into the opposite corner.

Juventus restored their advantage ten minutes later when Timothy Weah equalized, but Ismael Saibari responded, making it 2-1 in the 74th minute to level the aggregate scoreline.

PSV had multiple opportunities to secure the tie before extra time, but it was Flamingo’s decisive moment that capitalized on a defensive mix-up, clinching a 4-3 aggregate triumph for PSV.

Despite a shaky start and failing to register a shot on target in the first half, the Dutch side deserved the victory.

Juventus captain Manuel Locatelli acknowledged their shortcomings, stating;

“They played better than us and wanted to qualify more; the result always speaks for itself, the rest is just chatter. We have to look each other in the eyes and understand what the problems are.”

Coach Motta addressed the press after the game, accepting that his team only had themselves to blame for their exit.
