Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has opened investigations following disorder that marred the FKF Super Cup encounter between Gor Mahia and Tusker at Nyayo National Stadium.
The match itself ended in celebration for Tusker, who secured a 3-1 victory over the Kenyan champions to claim the season-opening trophy. However, events around the stadium later shifted attention away from the pitch after incidents involving supporters and other individuals were reported.
FKF has moved to establish what triggered the unrest and identify those responsible for the incidents.
The federation has also condemned the violence, stressing that football should provide a safe environment for supporters, players, officials, journalists and other stakeholders.
The disturbances reportedly included confrontations and damage around the stadium, with journalists also among those affected during the chaos.
FKF is expected to review available information and evidence as part of its inquiry before determining what action should be taken against individuals or groups found to have breached football regulations.
The investigation comes at the beginning of a new domestic football season, putting renewed focus on security and supporter conduct at Kenyan football matches.
On the pitch, Tusker had produced an impressive performance to overcome Gor Mahia and lift the Super Cup. The result gives the Brewers an early boost ahead of the new FKF Premier League campaign, while Gor Mahia will be keen to put the disappointing result behind them.
For FKF, the priority will now be ensuring that incidents surrounding the Super Cup do not set the tone for the season ahead.
