FIFA has intensified its fight against online abuse, unveiling decisive measures to safeguard players, coaches, and officials from harmful digital attacks.
The football governing body’s latest announcement, timed to coincide with the International Day for Tolerance, underscores the increasing importance of safeguarding football’s global community from discrimination and hate speech.
Since the launch of the Social Media Protection Service (SMPS) in 2022, FIFA has monitored millions of posts across platforms, flagging abusive content and escalating the most severe cases to law enforcement.
In 2025 alone, over 30,000 abusive posts were reported, while 11 individuals were referred to authorities in countries including Argentina, Brazil, France, Spain, Poland, the UK, and the US. One case even reached Interpol, underscoring the seriousness of the issue.
The SMPS doesn’t just remove harmful content—it proactively filters abusive messages before they reach their intended targets, shielding players and their followers from exposure.
FIFA has also introduced blacklisting measures, preventing offenders from purchasing tickets to future tournaments. This step sends a clear message: online abuse will carry real-world consequences.
Infantino’s firm stance
FIFA President Gianni Infantino emphasised that football must remain a safe and inclusive space, both on and off the pitch. “Abuse has no place in our game,” he declared, stressing FIFA’s commitment to working with member associations, confederations, and law enforcement to hold offenders accountable.
The SMPS was notably deployed during the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, where 2,401 accounts were monitored, 5.9 million posts analysed, and nearly 180,000 flagged for review.
This large-scale monitoring ensured that players from 72 nationalities were protected from discriminatory and threatening content.
By combining advanced technology with human expertise, FIFA is setting a precedent for how sports organisations can tackle online abuse. The initiative not only protects individuals but also helps prevent the normalisation of hate speech in football culture.
With these measures, FIFA is signalling that tolerance, respect, and inclusion are non-negotiable pillars of the game. As the digital era continues to shape football’s future, the SMPS stands as a vital safeguard against the darker side of online engagement.
