DP Position Battle Emerges as Western Leaders Make 2027 Demands

Leaders from Kenya’s Western Region have intensified their political demands, now pushing for the Deputy President position in President William Ruto’s anticipated 2027 re-election strategy.

The push was made public during a high-level meeting held in Naivasha that brought together more than 28 Members of Parliament from the Western Region.

The leaders used the forum to consolidate their political agenda ahead of the next general election.

The meeting was attended by several senior leaders from the region, including National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, Cooperatives Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya, Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa, Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka, and Vihiga Governor Wilberforce Otichillo, among other political figures.

Addressing journalists after the meeting, Lugari Member of Parliament Nabii Nabwera said the region is united in its demand for the Deputy President slot, arguing that Western Kenya has both the numerical strength and leadership capacity to hold the position.

He noted that the region is seeking stronger representation in national leadership structures.

The leaders also emphasized the importance of unity among Western Kenya politicians, stating that internal cohesion would strengthen their bargaining power at the national level.

They urged their counterparts to set aside political differences and focus on collective regional interests.

In their statement, the leaders expressed continued support for President Ruto’s leadership and re-election bid, pointing to what they described as improved engagement with the region and increased allocation of development resources under his administration.

They further called on the national government to expedite the completion of ongoing development projects across Western Kenya.

These include key initiatives in infrastructure, healthcare, education, water supply, and agriculture, which they said are critical to the region’s economic growth and development.

The renewed push for the Deputy President position comes amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 General Election, with various political blocs positioning themselves for negotiations within the broader national coalition landscape.
