Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund played to an exciting 2-2 draw in Der Klassiker, keeping the title race wide open as they head into the final five games of the season.
The match, which was crucial for both teams’ ambitions, delivered on its promise with four goals scored in the second half and numerous twists throughout the game. For Thomas Müller, it marked a significant milestone as he equaled Mats Hummels’ record of 29 appearances in Klassiker matches.
The first half was tense, with both teams probing for weaknesses but failing to break the deadlock. Bayern dominated possession but struggled to convert their advantage into clear-cut chances. Michael Olise was particularly active for Bayern, creating several opportunities.
Dortmund, on the other hand, remained disciplined in defense and looked to counterattack. Müller came closest to scoring for the hosts, narrowly missing the target with a left-footed effort. Meanwhile, Julian Brandt’s shot that hit the side netting represented Dortmund’s best opportunity in the first half.
The game came alive just three minutes after the restart. Maximilian Beier stunned the Allianz Arena by heading home a Julian Ryerson cross to give Dortmund a 1-0 lead. This goal came against the run of play but showcased Dortmund’s clinical edge, as it was their first shot on target.
Bayern coach Vincent Kompany responded with a triple substitution, bringing on Raphaël Guerreiro, Aleksandar Pavlović, and Serge Gnabry. The changes paid immediate dividends. In the 65th minute, Guerreiro, facing his former club, leveled the score with a well-placed shot from inside the box after good work from Gnabry and a lay-off from Müller.
Just four minutes later, Gnabry put Bayern ahead with a clinical finish following a dazzling solo run, making the score 2-1 in favor of the hosts. Just when it seemed Bayern had seized control of the match, Dortmund struck back.
In the 75th minute, Waldemar Anton reacted fastest to a loose ball in the box after a Serhou Guirassy shot, firing home to level the score at 2-2 and setting up a thrilling conclusion to the already captivating match.
In the final minutes, both teams pushed for a winner, with Bayern’s Harry Kane and Dortmund’s Carney Chukwuemeka both coming close. However, neither side could find the decisive goal, and the match ended in a fitting 2-2 draw.
