The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched investigations into an incident where armed robbers stormed a restaurant and robbed customers at gunpoint.
In notice, the authority noted that the incident happened in the Westlands area of Nairobi on Saturday, July 4, at a restaurant along General Mathenge Road.
According to the DCI, they are pursuing four suspects who arrived on two motorcycles, stormed the premises, stole valuables from customers and escaped towards the Parklands area after discharging two rounds into the air.
“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has commenced investigations into a robbery with violence incident that occurred yesterday at a restaurant along General Mathenge Road in Westlands Sub-County, Nairobi County,” the authority stated.
“Four unknown suspects on two motorcycles stormed the restaurant, robbed customers of valuables, discharged two rounds into the air, and fled towards the Parklands direction,” the statement added.
The investigations began affter widespread CCTV footage captured the attack, with the public raising concerns over insecurity, especially in the capital.
According to the footage, two armed robbers stormed the cafe at around 10:35 pm, after being dropped by two motorcycles.
Upon entering the cafe, the two men brandish their guns before commanding customers seated inside.
The attackers ordered the customers to surrender their belongings, where they are seen taking phones and other accessories belonging to the customers at gunpoint as the robbery unfolded within the establishment.
In approximately less than 30 seconds, the robbery had already come to an end, and the robbers had already left the premises, hoping to get to the motorcycles waiting for them outside.
According to the detectives, they have already recorded statements from several victims, with more victims and witnesses expected to assist investigators as the probe continues.
So far, the police have recovered a spent 9mm cartridge at the scene, which has been submitted for forensic examination.
