The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has officially launched probe into the death of gospel musician Rachel Wandeto.
In a statement on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, DCI confirmed its detectives from the homicide unit have taken over the investigations on the matter after Wandeto was brutally attacked in Mwiki.
Following the attack, the gospel artist succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment at the Kenyatta National Hospital.
“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Homicide Directorate has taken over investigations into the brutal murder of Rachel Wandeto,” DCI stated.
According to the DCI, she was confronted by a group of three men who assaulted her with a flammable substance and set her on fire before fleeing the scene.
Wandeto was then reportedly rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital, where she was found to be 70 per cent burnt.
However, she succumbed to the injuries while undergoing treatment at the facility.
Her attack, however, has been largely attributed to her political affiliation and support of President William Ruto’s reelection in 2027, including drawing a tattoo in his honour.
Additionally, the police have since intensified investigations into the incident, with the Homicide Unit leading efforts to establish the motive behind the attack and identify those responsible.
“Detectives are tirelessly working to uncover the full circumstances surrounding this heinous crime and to identify and apprehend all individuals involved in its planning and execution,” DCI added.
The authority further called on the members of the public with any information to report to the nearest police station in the ongoing investigations.
