A former Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company employee has been convicted after a court found that he used falsified Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) details to obtain a job at the state-owned utility.
In a statement, the court ordered the former employee to pay Ksh7.54 million in compensation and fines following a judgment delivered on October 29.
“The Milimani Anti-Corruption Court has convicted a Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) employee for using a forged academic certificate to secure employment and ordered him to pay a total of KES7,542,673 in compensation and fines,” the statement read.
The court established that he had submitted a KCSE certificate showing a mean grade of C plain in the 2002 examinations despite having actually scored a D plain.
However, he was acquitted of the separate charge of forging the academic document.
Investigations were conducted by the EACC after it received a report that he had used falsified qualifications to secure employment
After the investigations, the commission forwarded the case to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) with recommendations for criminal proceedings.
In its ruling, the court directed the employee to refund Ksh6,742,673, representing salaries he received from November 2016 to December 2023, or serve four years consecutively in prison if he fails to pay.
He was also fined Ksh800,000 across the four offences, with individual penalties ranging from Ksh100,000 to Ksh300,000.
