Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has officially joined the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), leaving the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Sakaja was welcomed into the opposition party on Monday, November 2, at Chungwa House in Nairobi by senior officials, including Deputy Party Leader Simba Arati and National Chairperson Gladys Wanga.
The governor said his political journey had been closely linked to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, whom he worked with before and during his tenure as Nairobi governor.

Sakaja also reflected on the criticism he faced over his association with Raila, revealing that some political leaders had accused him of secretly supporting ODM even before the formation of the Broad-Based Government.
He maintained that his decision to work with the former prime minister had attracted opposition from leaders who disagreed with their political cooperation.
The governor’s defection comes amid growing calls from a section of ODM supporters for him to formally join the party.
His move also marks a significant political shift ahead of the 2027 General Election, as parties continue to position themselves for the upcoming contest.
