A man has been found guilty of being a member of Al-Shabaab and sentenced to a combined 115 years in prison after his conviction on seven terrorism-related charges.
In a statement issued on Friday, August 7, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) said Principal Magistrate Gideon Kiage of the Kahawa Law Courts found that evidence presented by 10 prosecution witnesses proved the case.
“In convicting the accused, Hon. Kiage held that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt,” the statement read.
According to reports, the court convicted the man of membership in the extremist group, alongside three counts of collecting information linked to committing a terrorist act.
Additionally, he was found guilty on three counts of possessing items connected to terrorist activities.
According to the DPP, a forensic examination of a mobile phone recovered from the accused uncovered videos containing extremist propaganda linked to recruitment, radicalisation and terrorist training.
The case arose from his arrest in the Eastleigh area in September 2022 during a security operation.
Kiage sentenced the convict to 20 years in prison for belonging to Al-Shabaab and imposed additional prison terms for the remaining offences.
The sentences add up to 115 years but will be served concurrently in line with the court’s orders.
Furthermore, the court directed that the convict undergo a deradicalisation programme while serving his sentence.
