The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has secured the conviction of three individuals linked to a terrorism-related case.
This was after they escaped from Kamiti Maximum Security Prison.
In a statement, the DPP revealed that the accused persons were charged under Section 4(1) of the Prevention of Terrorism Act, 2012, for committing a terrorist act.
“The three convicts were found guilty by the Kahawa Anti-Terrorism Court after Prosecution successfully proved its case beyond reasonable doubt,” the ODPP stated.
The court heard that on the night of November 14, 2021, and the morning of November 15, 2021, at the GK Kamiti Maximum Security Prison in Nairobi County, the three knowingly escaped from custody.
During the trial, the prosecution called 10 witnesses, whose testimonies and evidence helped the court to reach a guilty verdict against the three accused persons.
According to reports, this comes months after the High Court had convicted three Kamiti Maximum prison wardens for facilitating the escape of the three terrorist inmates.
The trio were found guilty of neglect of official duty, aiding prisoners to escape, and organising a meeting in support of a terrorist group.
Evidence presented in court showed that the escape involved organised movements within the prison, which the officers either permitted or directly assisted, enabling the planning and coordination of the breakout.
The matter is scheduled to mentioned again in June 18 for sentencing.
