Claris Ogangah Takes Oath as Kenya’s Human Rights Commission Chair

Claris Ogangah was on Monday, October 13, sworn in as the new Chairperson of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR). 

During the ceremony, she noted that her term begins at a time when Kenya’s social and political climate is deeply linked to human rights concerns. 

Ogangah emphasized the importance of cooperation between citizens, civil society, and government institutions to protect fundamental freedoms.

She moreover noted that the commission’s mission goes beyond monitoring violations, noting that it also entails building a culture that internalizes the principles of fairness and justice.

As she assumed office, Ogangah pledged to uphold human dignity, enhance accountability, and restore public confidence through active civic participation.

“As Chairperson, I pledge to Defend the dignity and equality of every person – ensuring that all Kenyans, especially the marginalized and voiceless, are protected and heard; Strengthen accountability and justice – by working with state institutions, civil society and communities to uphold the rule of law and constitutional values and Rebuild public trust through civic engagement – expanding rights education and deepening the Commission’s presence across the country so that all citizens can claim their rights and fulfill their responsibilities,” she noted.

Recognizing the challenges of championing human rights, Ogangah urged for unity, courage, and resilience in reinforcing KNCHR’s mandate. 

She further called on all Kenyans to take part in building an inclusive and rights-conscious nation.
