Atwoli Pushes for Social Media Regulation to Curb Misuse and Harm

Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli has called on the government to regulate social media platforms.

Speaking during the COTU Shop Stewards meeting held on Saturday, April 5, 2025, Atwoli urged the public to reduce negative criticism, cautioning that social media misuse could push away potential investors.

According to the COTU boss, the spread of misinformation on social media could incite violence and lead to conflicts in some countries, such as South Sudan and the Republic of Congo (DRC).

“You cannot even go to Goma or other countries engaged in war. Somalia has never had a stable government, and we do not want to take that route. Now, it will force us to tell the government to regulate social media”, Atwoli said.

“It is a must we regulate social media because sometimes these children access apps such as TikTok, which show unethical videos. I want to tell you the truth: platforms must be regulated,” she added.

This comes at a time when ICT Cabinet Secretary (CS) Wiliam Kabogo unveiled plans to regulate social media to control how Kenyans use the platform.

“This a situation where our regulator should be able to engage these pro-writers or the owners of these apps to know how they can be regulated”, he said.
