President William Ruto hosted more than 5,000 artisans from Nairobi County at State House on Thursday, July 23, where he unveiled a series of government initiatives aimed at creating jobs, empowering skilled workers and strengthening the informal sector.
The President said the government is implementing programmes designed to place young people at the centre of Kenya’s economic transformation by expanding employment opportunities and supporting entrepreneurship.
As part of the plan, Ruto noted that Nairobi County is benefiting significantly from the Affordable Housing Programme, with 36 projects currently under construction.

Once completed, the projects are expected to deliver more than 180,000 housing units while creating tens of thousands of jobs and stimulating economic activity across the capital.
He added that the government will continue investing in initiatives that equip young people with practical skills, resources and employment opportunities to help them build sustainable livelihoods.
To boost the informal sector, Ruto announced an allocation of KSh80 million to support artisans and mechanics in Nairobi County.
The funds will enable them to acquire modern tools and equipment, improve productivity and expand their businesses.
The President also highlighted progress under the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) programme, revealing that more than 40,000 Kenyans have already registered to have their existing skills formally assessed and certified.
He encouraged more artisans and skilled workers to enrol, saying certification would enhance their employment and business opportunities.
In addition, Ruto said the government is constructing modern workshops for artisans and mechanics across Nairobi.
The facilities are expected to provide safer and more dignified working environments while supporting the licensing and formalisation of businesses operating in the informal sector.
