TVETA Cancels KIM Diplomas Citing Unapproved Courses and Missing Exams

The Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) has revealed further details on why diplomas and certificates issued by the Kenya Institute of Management (KIM) from 2018 were over unapproved courses and failure to meet required examination standards.

According to TVETA, the decision was based on non-compliance with the TVET Act, which governs training, examination and certification of diploma-level programmes.

TVETA claimed that KIM continued to use internal examination systems despite the conditions in its 2019 licence requiring external oversight, rendering the examinations conducted during that period invalid for accreditation.

TVETA stipulates that institutions offering diploma-level courses, categorised as Level 6, require curricula approval before students can be examined and certified.

The authority also raised concerns over KIM’s reported arrangement with the Management University of Africa (MUA).

In 2022, the two institutions partnered to offer joint programmes, examinations and certification to allow easier transition from diploma to degree studies for students.

TVETA said the roles of the two institutions in training and certification are still unclear to the authority, especially in the case of joint courses such as business management.

The authority further clarified that for diploma programmes to be valid, the curriculum must be reviewed and approved by the regulatory board before an institution, such as MUA can act as an assessment body.
