State Declares Night Curfew in Narok’s Trans Mara Areas

The government has imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew in Trans Mara South and West sub-counties of Narok County following violent clashes in the area.

Speaking on Saturday, December 20, Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat said the two regions have been classified as disturbed areas due to the prevailing security situation.

Lagat noted that police have been deployed to conduct a security operation aimed at restoring law and order and preventing further criminal activity.

He added that movement will be restricted between 6pm and 6am until stability is fully restored, warning that authorities will take firm action against individuals involved in criminal acts.

The Deputy Inspector General further stated that the Ministry of Interior is set to issue a gazette notice formally declaring parts of Trans Mara South and West as disturbed areas.

The curfew affects Nkararu in Trans Mara West and several areas in Trans Mara East, including Lolgorian Town, Angata Barakoi, Ololoma, Siteti, Mashangwa, and Sachangwan.

The move follows violent clashes between the Maasai and Kipsigis communities that left several people dead and properties destroyed.

Kenya Red Cross says more than 1,800 people have been displaced and at least 253 households burnt, forcing families to seek shelter in schools, health facilities, and open areas.

The agency noted that it is on the ground providing psychosocial support and mobilising aid for those affected.
