Mosiria Pushes for Deregistration of Firms Linked to Illegal Waste Disposal

Nairobi Chief Officer for Citizen Engagement and Customer Service Geoffrey Mosiria has called for the revocation of licences of private waste service providers accused of dumping garbage at illegal sites that were previously closed.

In a statement issued on Sunday, December 8, Mosiria noted that complaints began to emerge after his transition from the environment department, alleging that some private waste companies had resumed illegal dumping at the closed sites.

He further alleged that some of the operators had hired gangs to intimidate and attack county officials who attempted to enforce the law, escalating tensions during enforcement operations.

Mosiria urged youths involved in the activities to seek lawful employment opportunities, including county-supported environmental initiatives, instead of engaging in acts that undermine public sanitation efforts.

He went on to state that some private waste service providers have ignored official notices and resumed illegal dumping at closed sites.

Mosiria noted that legal action would be taken against the companies involved, following verification of renewed dumping and rising pollution levels.

He added that the Nairobi County government is considering building a Material Recovery Facility as a lawful alternative for compliant waste firms.
