Police in Konoin, Bomet County, have detained a woman accused of fatally assaulting her 9-year-old daughter and injuring her teenage son after allegedly punishing them for picking fruits from a neighbor’s farm.

She later rushed them to Longisa Hospital, where the daughter was pronounced dead while the 14-year-old boy was treated for minor injuries.

Konoin Police Commander Mohamed Godana confirmed that the suspect was arrested after preliminary investigations revealed she had used a stick during the assault.

“The mother used a stick to beat the child, and the girl was taken to the hospital but did not survive. The following day, the child passed away. That’s when we received the report and visited Longisa Hospital to get the facts about the matter, after which we arrested the mother,” he said.

The tragic event has stirred anger and deep reflection within the local community, with many residents condemning the act and urging parents to adopt non-violent approaches to discipline.

Residents stressed the need for understanding and dialogue between parents and children instead of resorting to physical punishment.
