Venue for the Second Leg of the Mashemeji Derby Announced

It has been officially announced that the second leg of the Mashemeji Derby, scheduled for Sunday, May 11, will take place at the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani.

After much speculation regarding where Kenya’s biggest club football fixture—the Mashemeji Derby, featuring arch-rivals Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards—would be held, the venue and date have now been confirmed.

Gor Mahia, the host team, has confirmed that the derby will be held at Kasarani on the planned date. K’Ogalo shared this announcement on their X (formerly Twitter) account, including photos of some club officials who visited the venue.

This Sunday’s match will mark the 97th edition of the derby and comes just two months after the first leg, which took place on March 30 at Nyayo National Stadium, ending in a goalless draw.

This derby will also be the first event hosted at the iconic stadium since it was closed for renovations and upgrades in August 2023. The 60,000-seat stadium is being renovated in preparation for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The derby comes at a crucial time for K’Ogalo, who are vying for what would be the club’s 22nd FKF Premier League title. Currently, the defending champions sit in second place on the table with 53 points, just two points behind league leaders Kenya Police, after 29 rounds of matches. In contrast, AFC Leopards, known as Ingwe, currently hold sixth place with 42 points, with five games remaining in the season.
