Four Filmmakers Linked to BBC Documentary Granted Anticipatory Bail

Four Kenyan filmmakers who are linked to the ‘Blood Parliament’ documentary by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) have been granted anticipatory bail of Ksh 10,000.

The bail was issued at Milimani Law Courts on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, where the four filmmakers identified as Nicholas Wambugu, Chris Wamae. Markdenver Karubiu and Brian Adagala were directed to appear before the DCI on Wednesday, May 21.

Their lawyer, Ian Mutiso, also disclosed that the courts barred the DCI from further arrest or harassment of the four filmmakers.

“The court has rendered that our client should not be subjected to any form of harassment or arrest. We have summons for 21st May 2025 at DCI HQ and a mention for 28th May 2025”, Mutiso stated.

Reports indicate that a search warrant that later surfaced online was aimed by the police to look for evidence connecting the four with the BBC documentary and had planned to charge them under the Cybecrimes Act.

This was despite a statement released by the British Broadcaster spokesperson who had disclosed that the four were not involved in the shooting of the ‘Blood Parliament’ documentary.

The documentary created a lot of controversy with the government since it exposed the roles of the National Police Service and the Kenya Defence Forces in the killing of the Gen Z during the protests in June 2024.
