Kisii County Senator Richard Onyonka has penned a letter requesting for government intervention following the outbreak of a mysterious illness in the county.
In a recent press statement, Onyonka acknowledged the Ministry of Health’s prompt launch of investigations into the matter but also issued five demands to the ministry to mitigate the spread.
The senator wants the expedited testing and analysis of collected samples to quickly identify the infection and commence the relevant interventions.

He went on and urged the Ministry of Health and the Kisii County government to deploy additional medical personnel and provide the necessary supplies to treat those affected.
The senator also emphasised the need for public health awareness, urging county residents to be mindful of what they consume and to take precautions such as boiling all drinking and cooking water to minimise the risk of infection.

Onyonka further demanded that the government keep the public informed on the progress of investigations to maintain transparency in handling the crisis.
The senator’s demands come hours after reports indicated that over 200 people were hospitalized in Kisii following an unidentified illness.
Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni revealed that an emergency team has been sent to assess and respond to the situation.
The disease was first detected three weeks ago and has already spread to three villages. Among the symptoms reported include severe diarrhoea with bloody stools, fever and intense headaches.
Speaking at an AIPCA church event, Muthoni assured that the Ministry has intensified surveillance and screening efforts to identify the source of the illness.
