11 Al-Shabaab Militants Dead After Failed Mandera Attack Plot

At least 11 suspected Al-Shabaab militants were killed on Sunday morning after Kenyan security forces launched an intelligence-led operation against a makeshift militant camp near the Kenya-Somalia border in Mandera County.

According to police reports, the raid was carried out by the Special Operations Group (SOG) with aerial support after intelligence indicated that about 30 militants had gathered at the camp while planning to carry out a terror attack on one of the villages along the Mandera border.

The police revealed that the operation left 11 militants dead and seven others seriously injured, while the remaining fighters escaped across the border into Somalia.

During the operation, officers recovered three PKM machine guns, about 409 rounds of ammunition, and several documents believed to belong to the extremist group.

The police also recovered what they described as mandatory religious tax receipts allegedly issued by Al-Shabaab.

According to the authorities, the operation was aimed at disrupting the planned attack before it could be executed and preventing another cross-border terror incident in the North Eastern region.

Officials believe the documents provide new intelligence into how the group finances its operations and administers territories under its control through taxation and checkpoint collections.

According to security agencies, the recovered records reinforce intelligence that Al-Shabaab continues to operate an organised revenue collection network across parts of Somalia, using the funds to finance attacks and sustain militant activities.
