Veteran Kenyan javelin thrower Julius Yego is preparing for what is expected to be his final appearance at the Commonwealth Games, with the 37-year-old determined to end his illustrious career on a high at the 2026 edition in Glasgow.
Popularly known as “Mr. YouTube”, Yego heads into the competition as one of Kenya’s most experienced athletes, having represented the country at multiple Olympic Games, World Championships and Commonwealth Games over the last decade.
The former world champion first announced himself on the Commonwealth stage in 2014 when he won gold in Glasgow with a throw of 83.87 metres.
He followed that achievement with a silver medal at the 2022 Games in Birmingham, cementing his status as one of Africa’s greatest field athletes.
Speaking ahead of the competition, Yego admitted that this year’s Games could be his last Commonwealth appearance, making the tournament even more special as he targets one final medal for Kenya.
The veteran thrower has enjoyed a remarkable career, highlighted by his gold medal at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing and a silver medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
His success story earned him the nickname “Mr. YouTube” after he taught himself the art of javelin by watching online videos.
Yego has also played a leadership role within Team Kenya, inspiring younger athletes with his experience and resilience. As one of the country’s flag bearers in athletics, he remains confident that Kenya can deliver strong performances in Glasgow.
