With the 2026 FIFA World Cup down to its final four teams, the battle for the prestigious Golden Boot is proving to be just as exciting as the race for the trophy itself. Some of football’s biggest stars are separated by only a few goals, setting up a thrilling finish as the semi-finals get underway.
France captain Kylian Mbappé currently leads the race with eight goals and three assists, edging Argentina legend Lionel Messi, who also has eight goals but fewer assists. Under FIFA’s tiebreaking rules, assists are used to separate players if they finish level on goals, giving Mbappé the advantage heading into the semi-finals.
Messi, however, remains firmly in contention. At 39 years old, the Argentine icon has once again demonstrated why he is regarded as one of the greatest players in football history. The defending world champions still have at least one match remaining, meaning Messi has every opportunity to overtake Mbappé and claim another major individual honour.
England captain Harry Kane is also in the hunt with six goals, alongside teammate Jude Bellingham, who has matched Kane’s tally after an outstanding tournament. England’s progression to the semi-finals has kept both players in contention, although they will likely need goals against Argentina—and possibly in the final—to catch the two leaders.
France winger Ousmane Dembélé remains an outside contender with five goals, while Spain striker Mikel Oyarzabal has four goals and would need an exceptional finish to challenge for the award.
The race has become even more intriguing following the elimination of Norway. Erling Haaland, who scored seven goals, can no longer add to his tally after his country’s exit, leaving him likely to be overtaken by players whose teams remain in the tournament. The upcoming semi-finals could ultimately decide the destination of the Golden Boot. France face Spain, while Argentina take on England, with all of the leading contenders except Oyarzabal expected to play pivotal roles for their nations.
For Mbappé, another goal against Spain would strengthen his grip on the award. Messi, meanwhile, will look to inspire Argentina against England while moving clear at the top of the scoring charts. Kane and Bellingham know that a big performance against the defending champions could bring them right back into the race before the final.
The Golden Boot has often been won by players whose teams reach the latter stages of the tournament, and this year looks no different. With the final and third-place play-off still to come, every goal could prove decisive in determining who finishes as the 2026 FIFA World Cup’s leading scorer.
