EALA Member of Parliament Winnie Odinga has urged newly elected ODM Party Leader Oburu Odinga to create more space for young people within the party’s leadership and decision-making structures.
Speaking on Friday, March 27, during the Special National Delegates Convention (NDC), Winnie congratulated Oburu on his confirmation as party leader but emphasized the need for greater youth inclusion as the party enters a new phase.
She called on her uncle to ensure that the ongoing transition within ODM reflects the aspirations of young Kenyans, noting that their voices should play a central role in shaping the party’s direction.

Winnie stressed that young people are eager to actively participate in key decisions and negotiations, rather than remain on the sidelines.
She also advocated for the decentralisation of power within the party, pushing for stronger grassroots structures and more empowered local branches.
The EALA MP called for a reformed ODM that actively listens to and incorporates the views of young people.
She argued that the youth should not merely be mobilised to advance political agendas, but recognised as key stakeholders in shaping the party’s future.
Winnie urged Oburu to embrace openness by creating room for young members to engage, contribute, and hold leadership accountable without being sidelined. She noted that such inclusivity would ultimately strengthen the party.
She also weighed in on the ongoing tensions between younger leaders and the party’s old guard, stressing the need for dialogue and unity.
According to her, resolving these differences is crucial in rebuilding cohesion and positioning ODM as a stronger, more inclusive political force.
Winnie clarified that she did not attend the NDC to create divisions or incite the youth, but to promote unity within ODM.
