WhatsApp May Soon Delete Messages Automatically After They’re Read

WhatsApp is rolling out an update aimed at fixing the issue where disappearing messages are deleted before being read for Android and iPhones.

According to reports, the “After Reading” feature is designed to address situations where messages disappear under the current timer system before recipients open them, creating gaps in communication and confusion among users who oftentimes rely on timely message delivery.

With the new feature, the deletion countdown begin ls only when a recipient views the message, ensuring that unread messages remain accessible for longer before automatic removal.

This means users can choose how long a message stays visible after being read, with options of five minutes, one hour, or 12 hours, depending on preference.

Additionally, if a message is never opened, WhatsApp will automatically delete it after 24 hours for security, ensuring messages do not remain indefinitely on the platform even without user interaction.

Further reports indicate that the rollout has already begun for select WhatsApp beta users on Android devices, while iOS testers previously accessed an earlier version through build 26.19.10.72 before wider expansion plans were announced.

The update is also expected to expand recovery options, letting users retrieve a message deleted by mistake on WhatsApp for iOS, Android, and Desktop.

The feature is said to be part of Meta’s broader push to strengthen privacy protection for users while improving overall user experience, as the company continues refining how people manage their messaging data and digital interactions on WhatsApp
