Wetang’ula Breaks Silence on Circulating Claims About MP Wanyonyi

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has addressed and dismissed circulating claims about the condition of Kwanza MP Ferdinand Wanyonyi.

Speaking on Thursday, December 4, Wetang’ula explained that the MP had been hospitalised at a Nairobi facility for about a month before doctors recommended his transfer to India for specialised treatment.

He added that he had personally spoken to Wanyonyi and that parliamentary officials had also been in contact, confirming that the MP is alive and responding well to treatment.

Wetang’ula said the clarification was necessary to counter false rumours spreading within the MP’s constituency.

“Yesterday, I had a conference call with him, and this morning the clerk did the same. I’m saying this because I want to send a message to the evil rumourmongers out there in his constituency that he passed on, and we are holding on to information maliciously. He has not passed on; he’s in a hospital in India and responding well to treatment.”

This development follows an earlier announcement by Speaker Wetang’ula regarding the death of Parliamentary Service staff member Dr. Philip Brightone Buchere, who passed away on Monday, November 24.

In his statement, the Speaker described Buchere’s passing as a profound loss to Parliament and the broader public service.

He also revealed that Buchere died while undergoing treatment at the University Hospital Wurzburg in Germany.

Wetang’ula reflected on Dr. Buchere’s dedicated service, noting that he joined the Parliamentary Service in 2013 and later served as Head of the Senate Liaison Office from 2021.

He highlighted Buchere’s leadership as chair of the Parliamentary Service Commission Staff Pensions Scheme and his role in implementing the Post Retirement Medical Scheme.

Wetang’ula said Buchere’s passing is a major loss to Parliament and the public service, adding that funeral arrangements will be announced later.
